Part farce, part Tempest, part theatrical game, The Illusion weaves together obsession and caprice, passion and murder, into a dark exploration of the illusions of reality, perception and love. Tony Kushner, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America, adapted The Illusion from the17th Century masterpiece L'Illusion Comique by Pierre Corneille. The Illusion is filled with the brilliant wordplay, creativity and fierce intelligence characteristic of both Kushner and Corneille.

Following a successful fall 2000 run at the Gurdjieff Theater in San Francisco, foolsFURY transferred The Illusion to Marin Theatre Company's Second Stage in January 2001.
