5 and 6, 2004 foolsFURY continues its INCUBATOR series of works-in-progress this fall. INCUBATOR productions allow the foolsFURY ensemble to experiment with new material without the financial pressure of a full production. It also provides a venue for audiences to witness the artistic process at a different stage in development, and to provide feedback to the artists. This month the company experiments with Dan Dietz’s play, tempOdyssey. The play follows the story of Genny, a temp on her first day as a receptionist for a bomb manufacturer. Both a comedy, a love story, and an epic drama, tempOdyssey weaves together the drudgery of office work with the epic mythology of The Odyssey. foolsFURY began the INCUBATOR series in 2002 specifically as a venue to explore new works under consideration for future production. Since then the series has expanded to serve a number of important purposes in the company’s development. It has allowed the ensemble to explore other ways of working with text, and ways of developing non-text based theater pieces. It also allows the ensemble to work closely with actors and other theater makers from the community at large. INCUBATOR also provides a unique opportunity for audience members to dialogue with the artists. Each performance is followed by a “talk back” session with the artists, in which both the creation process and the resulting work are open for discussion. Since its inception there have been six INCUBATOR productions, including a collaboration with San Francisco playwright Trevor Allen (The Creature: REMIX), a new play by Constance Congdon (So Far), and most recently a company created piece based on Grimm’s fairy tales (Grimmly). foolsFURY Artistic Director, BenYalom, is highly enthusiastic about the play: “tempOdyssey is immensely imaginative, without being inaccessible. It’s a great story about people we recognize forced into uncomfortable situations by the world around them. It’s also perfect fodder for foolsFURY, hilarious yet sharply crafted, and ripe for our physical, boundary-bending, style.” |
