British playwright Howard Barker's collection of ten immensely powerful and disturbing short plays, weaves together a tapestry of brutality and moral ambiguity, set against the undeniable comic absurdity of human life. Each scene gives a face to the evils of society - class warfare, authoritarian regimes, religious strife -- revealing flesh and blood characters who attempt to hold onto their values amidst storms of irrationality. The piece raises far more questions than it answers.
This first production was an underground hit which ran at The Next Stage, was extended twice, garnered glowing reviews from numerous papers, and was named "Most Promising Debut" of the year by the SF Bay Guardian's Brad Rosenstein.
