foolsFURY presents BUILD Forward
OCTOBER 15-16 2021
Artist’s Call for Submissions!
ACCEPTING: AUGUST 4-AUGUST 31: Open Submissions
COMPENSATION: $250
THEME: Uprooted
foolsFURY seeks ensembles, devisers, activists and individuals to apply for Art Shares --short, thematic devised pieces to be shown during BUILD Forward digital convening October 15 and 16th 2021.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
What does resilience look like for us and the world around us in a time of ongoing inequity, grief and trauma?
This year's Art Share artist cohort will explore the theme “Uprooted”.
Current narratives of up-rootedness can be interpreted broadly and may include systemic inequities which give rise to displacement and crisis such as shelter-at-home orders putting so many careers on pause, digital isolation, financial, housing, and medical instability; upticks in mental health issues, our ongoing racial reckoning and the looming threat of climate crisis such as fires and smoke pollution that destabilize both urban and ‘urban wildland interface’ communities in California.
The objectives of the BUILD Art Share program are to:
SUPPORT ARTISTS using interdisciplinary storytelling and artistic modalities, in partnership with dramaturgs. Our unique form of dramaturgy, called Microturgy, pairs dramaturgs with artists and ensembles in service of new theatrical forms which investigate the nature of liveness.
AMPLIFY and center non-white and marginalized bodies and narratives and present the work to global audiences. We seek to specifically center those most vulnerable to the global pandemic, racial reckoning, and natural disasters.
ENGAGE theatrical and cross-sector partnerships with artists and organizations that will raise awareness of the climate, health and place-based inequities and difficulties that individuals are enduring to survive and thrive during these times.
CULTIVATE collaboration, connections, inspiration and resilience in our artist community as we take stock of where we are at, and build anew from here.

ARTSHARE FAQS:
WHAT IS “MICROTURGY”?
Microturgy allows dramaturgs to collaborate and rapidly iterate with partner artists on short pieces and develop performances ready for public showing in a 4-5 week timeframe with potential future collaboration opportunities. Microturgy may include dramaturgical input, research, word clouds, and materials that amplify the artistic performances.
WHAT’S THE CURATION PROCESS AND WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I AM ACCEPTED?
The Art Share cohort for BUILD Forward 2021 will be selected by a diverse ART SHARE selection panel, led by Anita Holland, Art Share Producer and Curator in collaboration with Dr. Vidhu Singh, Art Share Coordinator, and announced on September 7, 2020.
HOW WILL I BE PAIRED WITH A DRAMATURG?
Our dramaturgy cadre is connected with a rich pool of knowledgeable dramaturgs. They will partner each artist/ensemble with a dramaturg who resonates with your work, has cultural competency for your project, particular background and/or lived experience. The pairs will be introduced shortly after the selection announcement on September 7, 2020.
HOW WILL I WORK WITH A DRAMATURG?
Once our dramaturgy cadre connects each artist/ensemble with a dramaturg, both parties will follow up with a virtual collaboration of a minimum of 1 hour that illuminates the piece and facilitates the submission of the final Art Share by OCTOBER 5. Each pair is responsible for clarifying the needs of the project and the extent of the collaboration.
HOW LONG WILL MY PROJECT BE STREAMED WITH BUILD FORWARD?
We ask that all pieces remain available for streaming on a public platform for a minimum of 1 year from the date of release. Please let us know if you may require a different agreement.
WHEN AND HOW DO I GET PAID?
Selected artists and ensembles must submit a W9 to foolsFURY’s Production Manager by September 7, 2021. Once this step is complete, a check for $250 will be mailed to each participating artist or ensemble. The projected date for completing all payments for participants is OCTOBER 31.
ABOUT BUILD fORWARD
Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Debórah Eliezer, partnered with the TGNC Trans Advocacy Collective and alongside Guest Facilitator Claudia Alick of Calling Up Justice, foolsFURY Theater is gathering the field of ensemble theater makers in a digital convening. True systemic change takes all of us. Let’s reflect on this year of the pandemic, displacement, shutdown and change. Look at our foundational core as theatre makers and explore and assess the voices and stories we amplify. Let’s consider how real change takes time, resilience and iterative, long-term commitment: all characteristics exemplified in ensemble theater practice.
BUILD Forward is a two-day event featuring townhalls, artistic presentations, and panels designed for artists, activists, culture workers, educators, theater professionals, and anyone interested in building effective and long-lasting systemic change. Connect, learn, laugh and relate.
Registration gives you greatest access. (Registration for the convening will open end of August 2021)

BUILD FROM HERE ART SHARES 2020
Throughout our two days together, we will be featuring Art Shares: 5-minute interdisciplinary snapshots of the diverse artists who would have been our FURY Factory 2020 cohort. Each company will present sneak peeks of their present and future projects and their vision for the future of ensemble theatre-making. Plus, through our longtime partnership with LMDA, we coined “Microturgy”, a rapid, tiny new model of dramaturgical collaboration. One Microturg was matched with each Artist/Company, acting as a listening ear, a fly on the wall, or a collaborative thought partner. Each Art Share will include the Microturg’s Word Cloud inspired by their engagement with the Artists.
