DUE TO COVID-19 WE HAVE POSTPONED ALL OUR IN-PERSON CLASSES & WORKSHOPS FOR THE MOMEMT.
WE’RE FINDING NEW WAYS TO TRAIN TOGETHER, SO PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR ANY UPDATES
WHAT OUR TRAINING LOOKS LIKE
As an ensemble theater company, we are always looking for ways to build ensemble practice, practitioners, and support others who create within the model of ensemble theater. We see your participation as a member of a greater community. MOMENTUM training or The Vital Act intensives may continue in various forms such as off-site retreats, weekly drop-in classes, online learning, opportunities to offer your unique skills, or other innovative ways of working together.
WE WELCOME all interested folks of any experience and ability, especially those who may be underserved or have not yet had the privilege of accessing certain trainings through a traditional university setting. We practice creating community held in the values of mutual support, greater equity, physical autonomy and better practices for social justice in our society. Ensemble theater training is a means for social change and we need YOU in the room to help change oppressive systems. If you have ways to improve our practice, please let us know.
OUR CORE curriculum combines rigor, creative inspiration and thoughtful composition work. Solo, partner and group work will be explored and shared. Training will include (and is not limited to) The Viewpoints, Suzuki Method of Actor Training, and composition work with text, as well as vocal training for speech and singing. No experience is necessary in any form taught, however experienced students may be further challenged.
TEAM TEACHING: foolsFURY often collaborates with 1-2 experienced company member instructors over the course a workshop, or with single teachers leading specific exercises. FoolsFURY company members train alongside workshop participants. Group conversation and individual participation of every student is encouraged and necessary for the process. Company members and other participants may also contribute from time to time.
In the wake of a racial reckoning, an upcoming presidential election, and the We See You White American Theater movement, you may be asking, “What is my place as a White American in the current social justice ecosystem?”
Black and POC colleagues and friends are tired of being unsupported and calling out racial oppression in the workplace alone. Well-meaning white folks are unconsciously doing harm all the time. Let’s use our desire for change to go beyond solidarity statements and bravely step into antiracist practice and action.
We are hosting a 6-week anti-racist learning circle designed for white, white-identified and white-passing people. Using layla f. saad's 28-day "Me and White Supremacy" as a framing resource, we will work through the challenge prompts individually and meet weekly to share our learning, discomfort, and insights together. We will use a counsel format, where all voices can be heard to facilitate inclusion and to build our learning community.
Facilitated by foolsFURY Board Chair Pamela Hollings and Artistic Director Debórah Eliezer, we are particularly interested in extending this conversation to white non-profit board members of arts and civic organizations nationwide. Join us to work with your colleagues in this necessary step toward equity and justice. Artists, arts enthusiasts and the general public are also welcome.
WHO:
We are not experts. We welcome all learners, seekers, community builders, culture shapers, artists, teachers, and anyone who supports and wants to be supported within an antiracist arts community. No previous social justice background or experience required. Change is in the hands of all of us. We are calling white, white-identified and white-passing individuals. Everyone is welcome to join us.
WHEN:
September 22 - Tuesday, October 27
Six Tuesdays 3:30pm - 5pm PT / 6:30-8pm ET
WHERE:
Zoom link provided on registration
HOW:
Primarily using a counsel format* we will begin with introductions, intention setting and agreements. It is vital that the space is set so that all feel welcome and free to share. Each week we will commit to responding to a number of prompts from Me and White Supremacy by layla f. saad. During our meetings we will share our responses without mediation or conversation. Finally, we will gather insights and learnings; setting intentions for personal and institutional growth, and committing to accountability practices going forward.
* Counsel format is a group process in which one person speaks and others listen without interruption or cross talk. Hand signals may be used to affirm the speaker’s words.
REGISTRATION: $175-$60 sliding scale. Please pay the maximum amount you are able, to allow others the ability to participate. Consider making an additional donation to foolsFURY to support our antiracist public training series and BIPOC-specific programming.
In preparation for the group, please go to http://laylafsaad.com/meandwhitesupremacy to purchase the workbook, Me and White Supremacy.
How do we cultivate states of aliveness in a digital-centered time? What does it mean to make theater when we’re physically apart?
In this drop-in workshop series, we'll explore ways we connect to place and to each other. Ensemble theater is about being in relationship with - in relationship with our feelings, our space, our world. Let's use our artististic practices to facilitate greater awareness, accountability and change for the world in which we wish to live.
Using a combination of meditation, song, writing and small-group exercises, we'll hunt for moments of theatrical inspiration. Suitable for anyone looking for more creative connection, stress-relief and kindred spirit.
